What does it take to be a good mentor and a good mentee? Writer, mentor, and legendary music business “matriarchitect” Sophia Chang lays out 10 guidelines that explore the age-old exchange of knowledge from both sides.

Sophia Chang is a screenwriter, author, and TV producer, currently developing a scripted series based on her Audible memoir “The Baddest Bitch In The Room”. She was the subject of an episode of the Hulu series “Defining Moments.” Chang founded Unlock Her Potential, a program that provides free mentorship for women of color. The self-proclaimed first Asian woman in hip-hop, Chang managed Ol’ Dirty Bastard, RZA, GZA, D’Angelo, Raphael Saadiq, Q-Tip, and A Tribe Called Quest. She trained with and managed a Shaolin Monk, Shi Yan Ming, who became her partner and father of her children. She produced runway shows for Vivienne Tam and “Project Runway All Stars,” was an account executive at a digital agency, and did business development at a cannabis company.

Manifesto is a series on WePresent which invites activists and creatives with something to say to write 10 rules to live by, in order to help spread their message. The artwork on this page was created by Joanna Malinis.
