Chinese writer and photographer Lu Yufan received an MA in Photography and Urban Cultures at Goldsmiths in London before returning to Tianjin and Beijing, where she lives and works. The interdisciplinary nature of the course on photography and sociology combined Lu’s talent for combining visual expression and extensive sociological research, which underpins the work she’s become known for. Interested in the therapeutic function of body expression in front of a camera, Lu’s work has been exhibited the world over, including Japan, Italy, Germany and London. We featured her ongoing project “Make Me Beautiful” on WePresent: her series exploring the thought process taken and the peer pressure faced by those who have had or will have cosmetic surgery, an industry which has boomed in China at an alarming rate and continues to grow.
