Paula Scher is one of the world’s most important and influential graphic designers. As a partner at the famed Pentagram collective, she’s created eye-catching visual systems for the likes of Microsoft, Tiffany & Co., Citibank, and Coca-Cola. But her most memorable and enduring works have been done for cultural institutions—the Metropolitan Opera, the New York City Ballet, the Public Theater, the Museum of Modern Art. Drawing inspiration from pop culture and fine art, she has a knack for characterful typography, bold color, and dynamic composition. Along with her iconic design work, Paula maintains a personal practice creating enthralling paintings based on maps. We spoke to her about her painting process, and the joy of fusing art and information.
