José Morbán is an artist from the Dominican Republic who lives and works in Santo Domingo. He studied Fine Arts and Illustration at the Altos de Chavón School of Design in La Romana, and nowadays he creates work in many mediums, using the complex history of his island nation as his main inspiration. We featured his series “Dominican Dreams,” made up of paintings of key moments from the country’s turbulent past. Subdued in color, they have a vintage feel to them, and they shine a light on the gap between the image the country has often presented of itself, and the true events unfolding behind the scenes.
