Designer James Kirkup is the co-founder and creative director of the London create studio An Open Understanding. An expert in crafting brand identity, he’s worked with the likes of Nike, Guinness, BMW, Tommy Hilfiger and Universal Music. We spoke to him in 2017 about his “The Football Club Index,” a book he authored that documents the graphic heritage behind the English Premier League’s football club crests. For the project, James and his team commissioned original artwork from 48 designers, each a supporter of the club in question.
