Founded in 1974, Oakland non-profit Creative Growth is the world’s oldest institute for artists with developmental, mental and physical disabilities. The organization provides more than 150 participants with free studio space and the materials to pursue painting, sculpture, woodwork, and a variety of other creative pursuits. Rather than focusing on academic instruction, Creative Growth encourages creative exploration above all else. Participating artists have gone on to show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Smithsonian Institute, Art Basel, and the Venice Biennale.
