Join us in Amsterdam for an exhibition of Omani photographer Abdulaziz Al-Hosni’s project “Qalb Mahmood” commissioned by WePresent and in collaboration with Melkweg Expo. In this series, Aziz challenges traditional notions of masculinity and the strict gender norms that sometimes define Omani culture. Through his lens, he invites the viewer to rethink the fluidity of identity, offering a more inclusive and dynamic perspective. Celebrating freedom and embracing vulnerability, Aziz's work transcends conventional narratives and reveals the complex nuances of masculinity and love.
The Project
The title of the series, ‘Mahmood’s Heart’, is derived from the Arabic name Mahmood, which means “praised” or “recommended”. But beyond the literal translation, the title reflects a deeper exploration of emotional honesty and the courage it takes to challenge societal expectations. In this series, Aziz introduces us to Mahmood, a fictional character who embodies the universal struggle of good versus evil, love versus loss, and truth versus deception. Through a mix of intimate and staged scenes, Aziz captures the raw emotions, hidden desires, and quiet struggles of his participants, while challenging the strict constructs of gender and social norms.
