Author and artist Yeong-Shin Ma started writing graphic novels at 25 after completing his military service in South Korea. It was “Moms” which brought Yeong-Shin to the pages of WePresent, the first of his graphic novels to be translated into English, by Janet Hong. The book is entirely based around the stories his mum wrote about her life, as a divorced woman working as a janitor in Korea, as she decided to tell them. The gossiping and the dates, the fistfights and the heartache, this is probably not the life you picture when you think about your parents. He talked us through some of his favorite spreads of the outrageously funny book about middle-aged women that reexamines romance, lust, and gender norms.
