Born in Zimbabwe and based in Australia, Tkay Maidza is an artist that challenges the boundaries of hip-hop and pop music. Since releasing her debut album, “Tkay,” in 2016, she has released a wide range of music and been nominated for ARIA and BET awards. Her “Last Year Was Weird” series of EPs established her as a visionary artist and drew praise from publications like Pitchfork, The Guardian and Vogue. We interviewed Tkay after that series came to a close, and she told us about how she learned to embrace a DIY approach during the pandemic and become unapologetically herself.
