Sasha Samsonova is a self-taught Ukrainian photographer. Inspired by the likes of Irving Penn, Helmut Newton and Richard Avedon, her work straddles the art, fashion and commercial worlds. We commissioned Sasha for a special feature on WePresent, in which she shot make up-free models in the depths of a Hawaiian forest. In the interview, she explained how being surrounded by Ukraine’s mountains and forests, despite moving further and further into the bustle of LA since, has led her to ground much of her work in nature. Sasha has worked with Google, Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and Elle, and directed music videos for Ciara, Gallant, and Pink.
“I never feel any kind of power [over the model],” asserts Sasha, “I [only] feel the ability to control and build my shot.”
