Swiss photographer Roland Schmid documents the real-world consequences of sociopolitical decision making around the world. Over the years, he’s covered the Donbass conflict in Ukraine, the refugee crisis in Lesbos, and the legacy of the US’s herbicidal warfare program during the Vietnam War. For his 2020 series cross-border love, he captured friends, families, and couples reuniting along the Switzerland and Germany border, which was temporarily shut during the COVID-19 pandemic. As part of WeTransfer’s partnership with the World Press Photo awards, Roland told us about the touching moments of romance and relief he witnessed at the scene.
