Dutch visual artist Rogier van der Zwaag makes entrancing short films and animations that play with shape, sound, shadow and the viewer’s perception. His projects have ranged from videos of slowly shifting geometric forms, to orchestrated shows of smoke and light that visualize sound. He also creates playful real-world interventions, creating beguiling illusions using practical effects. Rather than starting with a full-blown concept in mind, Rogier begins with a basic idea, and experiments with this concept in front of his camera until he hits on something appealing.
“I like the idea that everything is in constant movement. If you could live for a million years and watch a mountain, you would be able to see the whole thing deteriorate or reshape over time.”
