Guatemalan performance artist Regina José Galindo uses her body to explore issues of oppression, injustice, and violence, both in her home country and abroad. Much of her work will make you wince at first glance; there’s some inherent discomfort at watching a woman carve the word “perra” (bitch) into her leg, being fondled and degraded by an audience, or subjected to waterboarding. But that discomfort is only one half of the experience: the other half, she hopes, is empathy—both for her own apparent suffering, and for the wronged groups her work is made in tribute to. Regina featured on WePresent when renowned performance artist Marina Abramovic acted as our guest curator and selected five rising performance artists from around the world to spotlight.
