Russian-born, Berlin-based artist Rachel Monosov uses performance, sculpture, photography, and video to explore themes of identity and belonging. She does so through the construction of elaborate narratives, informed both by her own life experiences and historical realities. Since 2017, she’s exhibited across Europe, Africa, and the United States. On WePresent, we spoke to Rachel about “1972,” a collaboration with Zimbabwean artist Admire Kamudzengerere. For the project, Rachel and Admire posed as an interracial couple and acted out various life events for the camera (a wedding, a holiday, building a house), asking how blurred the line is becoming between staged and documentary photography.
