In her personal and affecting practice, photographer Prin Rodriguez ruminates on issues of identity, folklore, tradition, and colonialism in the context of her native Peru. Her work often contains elements of both fact and fantasy—whether through constructed narratives inspired by reality, or through stylistic choices that alter the viewer’s perception of what’s happening in an image. On WePresent, we featured Prin’s photo series “Katatay,” a dynamic and dramatic look at the Vencedores de Ayacucho carnival in Lima. Each year, groups representing the provinces that make up the city of Ayacucho—the site of the 1824 battle that secured Peru’s independence from the Spanish—perform competing acts of dance and music.
