From 2009 to 2021, French multidisciplinary artists Pinar Demirdag and Viola Renate—aka Pinar & Viola—created surreal imagery that riffed on digital cultures and technologies of the past and present. Some of their projects include textile-inspired patterned collages of tacky digital ephemera, a hypnotic music video for Diplo, a trippy collection of homewares for Ikea, and garments printed with patterns designed using Google’s DeepDream machine-learning software. On WePresent, we spoke to them about bad taste, consumerism, and why good design is like spellcasting.
“If you feel you don’t fit in this world it’s because you are here to help create a new one.”
