Lagos-based performer Oxlade—born Ikuforiji Abdulrahman Olaitan—is part of a new wave of genre-bending Afrobeat singers taking on the world. The singer first rose to prominence in 2018, after featuring on a single by local rapper Blaqbones, but it was the 2020 release of his critically acclaimed single “Away,” off his debut EP, “Oxygene,” that made him a global sensation. Since then, his profile has been rising in his native Nigeria, throughout Africa, and beyond. We spent a day with Oxlade in Lagos and found out more about his connection to his hometown.
