American photographer Nadia Shira Cohen is a highly respected name in photojournalism. Based in Rome, her work has seen her report on COVID-19, abortion, indigenous rights, and pollution. As part of our annual collaboration with World Press Photo, in which we tell the stories behind the best photojournalism in the world, we took a closer look at her story about Mayan beekeepers in Mexico. Nadia captured the longstanding tension between the Mayan beekeepers of the Yucatan Peninsula and The Mennonites, a Christian group who took to soy farming in the same locations. Nadia has exhibited her photography all over the world, and was awarded the National Geographic Explorer Grant in 2019.
