Modupeola Fadugba was born in Lomé, Togo, in 1985. She’s a multimedia artist working in the mediums of painting, drawing, and socially-engaged installation. Her work is concerned with cultural identity, social justice, and the global economy, and we were drawn to Modupeola’s deep exploration of water in her art. From painting children learning to swim to her most recent project covering an all-Black senior synchronized swimming team, she’s explored water both as a metaphor for and through its place in Black experiences. She spoke to us about how her perception of water has changed through her career, and how it came to be such a repetitive presence in her work, which has been exhibited globally, and awarded the Dakar Biennale Grand Prize in 2016.
