Milcho Pipin is a Macedonian artist who specializes in editorial, documentary, and commercial photography. He spent a large portion of his career in Curitiba, Brazil, which is where he became aware of The Central Penitentiary of the State of Parana, one of the county’s many overcrowded prisons. With the help of criminologist Dr. Maurício Stegemann Dieter and around six month’s worth of legal paperwork and documentation, Milcho was granted access to the prison (which, up until that point, had enforced a 40-year media shutout.) He spent five days inside the prison photographing every detail of everything he saw, and we featured the resulting project, “Locked Up,” on the site.
