Born in California, artist Medina Dugger studied at Spéos Photographic Institute in Paris before moving to Lagos in Nigeria. It’s the latter city that has most influenced her art, which includes photography, collage, painting, print making and video, and her work focuses on identity, tradition, and indigenous knowledge. We profiled Medina after her artistic study of the hijab, in which she showed how the garment – often regarded as anti-feminist in the West – can actually be a powerful mode of self-expression. Medina has exhibited her work globally, and been featured by National Geographic, The Guardian, Smithsonian Magazine and many more.
