McSweeney’s is a pioneering nonprofit publisher based in San Francisco. It operates a daily humor website and a publishing house which releases books of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, comics and more. WePresent partnered with McSweeney’s on a unique literary experience, commissioning the writers Shelly Oria and Alice Sola Kim to collaborate on a single story. They took turns to write each chapter, allowing themselves to take the tale in whatever direction they felt was right while challenging each other to deepen the other’s work. The result was “Clean:” a gripping, apocalyptic and yet hopeful novella that is terribly hard to turn away from.
