Maïmouna Guerresi is an Italian-Senegalese multimedia artist working with photography, sculpture, video, and installation. Her works are grounded in spirituality—reflecting her own practice of Sufism, a mystical form of Islam—with characters who appear to transcend physicality or become one with nature. Each piece has a calming, almost balanced aesthetic, contrasting vibrant traditional costumes with vast empty space and muted landscapes. Featuring works from her projects “Aisha in Wonderland” and “Beyond the Border,” we spoke to Maïmouna about finding a way to visualize the abstract concept of spirituality.
