Liberty United’s mission is clear cut: using creation to fight destruction. Founded by social entrepreneur Peter Thum and his wife, actor Cara Buono in 2013, the company works in the areas of the US most affected by gun violence, obtaining seized illegal guns and ammunition from local police, and transforming them into high-end jewelry and accessories. A portion of their sales helps to fund after-school programs for at-risk kids. Peter spoke to WePresent about how Liberty United came to be, and how each of their collections is inspired by art, philosophical concepts, ideas about violence and peace, and the designs of the guns themselves.
“Jewelry is personal and it’s a statement about oneself. People wear it to express who they are.”
