Lene Pienaar is a South African artist and author based in Pretoria. Her work has been included in exhibitions in India, South Africa and the United States. Lene was asked to contribute to the “Unity” series: to mark what would have been Nelson Mandela’s 100th birthday, artists from around the world were asked to respond to his “Struggle” sketches with their own works. Using oil on cotton paper, Lene did not take the brief lightly and sees Mandela’s legacy being more important now than ever. We featured Lene’s contribution along with five other image-makers and asked them to share how they approached this once-in-a-lifetime commission.
