Kawira Mwirichia was a Kenyan artist and activist based in Nairobi. We featured her as part of WePresent’s collaboration with creative network The Dots. Together, we worked to showcase the next generation of LGBTQ creative talent making waves around the world – for Pride 2016 – and Kawira had to be one of them. Chosen by The Nest Collective (a small army of thinkers, makers and believers in Nairobi) Kawira was an internationally renowned multidisciplinary artist known for her project “To Revolutionary Type Love.” Using Kangas (a traditional African cotton cloth adorned with colorful patterns in Swahili sayings) Kawira designed one for every country in the world (that’s 196), combining each of their flags with a depiction of a pivotal moment in that place’s fight for LGBTQ rights; “A celebration of Queer LOVE, the Queer individual, and our Queerstory using Kanga cloth”.
