As founder of Flight Design Co, a small creative agency in San Francisco, Katrina McHugh has flexed her creative director muscles on a variety of projects for an impressive client roster—including The Smithsonian, Apple, and the World Health Organization. But it’s the work she does in her free time where she feels the most room to just play. It’s one of these side projects we featured and that, in 2018, was published as the book “Pop Charts: 100 Iconic Song Lyrics Visualized”. Sketching out visual interpretations of song lyrics using clever graphs and illustrations in an almost scientific style, Katrina not only found room to play, but learned that adding constraints to her creative process was much more helpful than she imagined.
