Canadian artist James Kerr—AKA Scorpion Dagger—creates absurdist gifs that infuse medieval-style paintings with elements of modern life and pop culture. These animations are wildly popular on Instagram, and since launching his account, James has been tapped to create work in a similar vein for the New York Times and the New Yorker. In 2021, he collaborated with content creators The Goggles and Closer Productions on The Book of Darryl, a hilarious book and augmented reality experience that follows a teenage boy living in ancient, Roman-occupied Nazareth. WePresent interviewed young “Darryl” to learn more about his musical aspirations, and the trials and tribulations of adolescence in 16 AD.
