South Korean animator and video artist Gyuri Cloe Lee has a talent for pleasingly surreal imagery that boggles the mind and delights the senses—think a toy rotary phone leaping with joy against a chevron background, a nude woman spooning a giant green crab, and school children performing gymnastics in the same frame as a giant ear of corn. If these seem random, there’s a good reason: Rather than relying on storyboards to guide her videos, Gyuri simply draws whatever pops into her head, later collaging them into digital frames. As part of her practice, she’s created vibrant and quirky music videos for Bakubaku Dokin, JNKYRD, John Grant, and Stealing Sheep.
