Growing up in Ireland, Genieve Figgis enjoyed learning about high society, admiring the luxurious aesthetic of high-ceilinged halls and debutante balls. Yet despite her love for this era of splendor, Genieve also became aware of its problematic attitudes, particularly towards women. This inspired her to put acrylic to canvas and paint her own reimagined version of the past. Free from obligations to historical accuracy, Genieve’s paintings depict a world of inclusivity. Each figure is as prominent and important as the next, regardless of sex or race, a parallel universe we all hope isn’t too far away.
