New Zealand-born painter and mixed-media artist Gabrielle Pool creates expressionistic works inspired by her time spent with indigenous tribes—including the Maasai in Kenya and the Hamer Tribe in Ethiopia—as well as her travels through the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and her current home, Australia. In 2005, Nelson Mandela invited Gabrielle to respond to his “Struggle” sketches with her own work as part of an international Unity series. To mark what would have been Nelson Mandela’s 100th birthday, we shared Gabrielle’s drawings and the personal story behind them in 2018.
