Vienna-based photographer Eugenia Maximova uses images to explore the subtle ways that politics manifests in our private lives, and our relationships with our possessions. Born under Communist rule in Bulgaria, Eugenia is particularly interested in nostalgia, memory and the aesthetics of kitsch in post-Soviet countries: We spoke to her about her design-focused series “Of time and memory,” for which she visited retro apartments across Eastern Europe. Along with her artistic practice, Eugenia works as a freelance photographer for National Geographic, The Economist, Die Zeit, The Guardian, and the Washington Post, among other publications.
