Growing up in Mexico City, volcanoes were a regular part of Elena Boils’ life. The city is a well-known volcanic region, and the more she learned about her surroundings, the more Elena began to think of the mountainous magma chambers as exciting, describing them as “terrifyingly beautiful.” It’s this fascination that inspired a series of playful animations, presenting multicolored volcanoes that spit and smoke and spew into deserted landscapes with no threat of real devastation. Elena’s work has been featured in a number of exhibitions and published by the likes of The Guardian, The New York Times, Monocle, and Google.
