Spanish photographer Daniel Ochoa de Olza, who splits his time between Madrid and Mexico City, has a deep interest in cultural rituals and traditions, as well as current events. His work has appeared in the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, El Pais, and Le Figaro, and he has been the recipient of countless photojournalistic awards. As part of our partnership with the World Press Photo awards, Daniel told us about his series of portraits of Las Mayas—little girls chosen to “star” in a centuries-old ceremony to welcome spring in the Spanish town of Colmenar Viejo.
