Born and raised in Queensland, Carla McRae’s avaricious appetite for comics as a teenager heralded a career in illustration, via a graphic design degree at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Shifting to Melbourne, she found a welcoming creative community, and now works in multiple mediums, from drawing and sculpture to installations and murals. Influenced by Japanese design, her work is marked by bright colors and bold forms, but it also has a sophisticated balance of detail and minimalism, and of warmth and abstraction. Demand for her work is keen, whether editorial, publishing, branding, or clothing—Apple, Disney, Oxfam, Pentagram, and Penguin have all come knocking. She’s completed murals in Melbourne for health centers, shopping malls, galleries, schools, and even a brewery headquarters.
