Amy Hussein Dominican Republic

An acrylic painting of a chimera with the body of a sphynx cat and the head of a woman stretching behind two date palms in a desert landscape.

Amy Hussein is a Dominican-Lebanese artist based in Santo Domingo, where she was born and raised. Her work focuses on the resignification, recodification and juxtaposition of images from contemporary culture. We featured her paintings—a love letter to her Lebanese-Dominican identity—in which she used old family photos to inspire characters’ faces, explored the spiritual connotations attached to certain animals and investigated mythical creatures of the ancient world in the process.
