Photojournalist and filmmaker Ami Vitale is best-known for her work featuring animals, such as Kenyan rhinos, Indian elephants and Chinese pandas. Ami started her career knocking on the doors of her neighbours (a long residential avenue which was changing rapidly–with old dairy farmers living next to poor African-American families, next door to million-dollar mansions) asking if she could take people’s portraits. These days, a regular contractor for National Geographic, Ami is also a six-time recipient of World Press Photo nominations, including 1st Prize for her magazine story about a community in Kenya protecting elephants. Ami was part of WePresent’s Union of Concerned Photographers in 2018, as her photography drew attention to species of wildlife with dangerously dwindling populations.
