East London-based artist Alex Chinneck’s world is characterized by its joyful and unexpected theatricality. From sliding townhouse facades and floating buildings to Christmas trees trapped in ice, the master illusionist unites the disciplines of art, architecture, theater and engineering to create accessible interventions that bring a sense of lighthearted surrealism to the city streets. His work often brings social issues to the fore – such as highlighting the social and economic decline in the wake of the 2021 summer Olympics – but while he likes to make a point, he makes sure to do it in an uplifting way.
