It’s been decades since Tony Aftab arrived in the UK from Lahore, Pakistan, but the place still has a strong impact on him and his cooking. His daughter, the photographer Tami Aftab, went back to his hometown to capture its magic in the WePresent commissioned book “The Rice is on the Hob”. Join us for an exhibition opening and book launch at Have A Butchers in Dalston, London.
The Book
This month, we published Tami Aftab’s photography series “The Rice is on the Hob,” featuring her father Tony, who suffers from short-term memory loss. Together, they journeyed from London to Lahore, where Tony grew up, connecting over their shared heritage and love of food.
Presented as a unique photography and cookbook, “The Rice is on the Hob” is an uplifting exploration of the role food and cooking play in forming identity and memories. The project intertwines Tami’s new photo series with recipes from her father—who, despite his memory loss, has always remembered dishes of his childhood.
The Event
We invite you to join us for a first look at the work, and to enjoy a selection of home-cooked dishes from Tony.
