Pogus Caesar is a photographer and activist who was born in the West Indies and grew up in Birmingham. Introduced to the work of Diane Arbus during a visit to New York in the 1980s, he bought a Canon film camera and has spent his life photographing diverse communities around the world ever since. Having travelled across the UK, Spain, India, South America, Sweden, Denmark, South Africa, Albania, and Jamaica, his work documents prominent figures and historical events, such as Birmingham’s devastating Handsworth Riots in 1985. We spoke to him about what he’s learned from documenting key moments in Black British history.
