Born in Lagos in 1989, Marcellina Akpojotor’s introduction to the creative world came during an apprenticeship with her father, who worked as a sign maker. As she helped him with drawing, design and calligraphy, she also watched on as he used a host of different materials in his work. In turn, her work nowadays combines acrylic paint with unconventional materials – often shards of discarded Ankara fabrics – as she creates compositions that explore African womanhood, and the way attitudes towards women have changed through the generations on the continent. Marcellina had her first solo exhibition “She Was Not Dreaming” at Rele Gallery in 2018 and has been involved in prominent art fairs around the world, from the FNB Art Joburg Fair in South Africa to Art Dubai.
