Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness, or BCUC, are an Afro-psychedelic seven-piece band hailing from Soweto, a township in Johannesburg. With three critically acclaimed albums to date (“Our Truth”, 2016, “Emakhosini,” 2018, “The Healing,” 2019) the band traverses genres and generations, drawing inspiration from indigenous music and infusing it with the energy of ritual, resulting in their very own genre: Africangungungu. We featured their work as part of our series in which Gilles Peterson, one of the world’s most influential DJs, shone a light on innovative and important musicians you’ve (probably) never heard of. This episode followed the release of their “Emakhosini'' record, featuring an exclusive live session and a discussion between Gilles and lead singer Jovi and percussionist/backing vocalist Kgomotso covering their spiritual relationship with music, the power of performance to communicate and the music of South Africa, past and present.
